Detectives are hunting for arsonists who torched a convertible luxury car outside a family home in the city’s south – the second such “targeted” attack on the same car within a few days.
Emergency services rushed to Barnards Avenue, in Hurstville in the city’s south, finding a white convertible Mercedes engulfed in flames just before midnight on Monday evening.
The car was parked in the driveway of the family home when it was torched, and the flames damaged the front of the two-storey house before firefighters could extinguish the blaze.
Police set up a crime scene and detectives quickly began to suspect the fire had been deliberately lit.
The car had been previously set alight just days earlier, about 1am on Friday morning.
Only minor damage had been inflicted on the Mercedes before the fire fizzled out on Friday, police said.
“Unfortunately, this is the second incident involving the same family and the same vehicle in the past three days,” Chief Inspector Chris Hill said on Tuesday.
“Clearly the incidents are targeted and of a suspicious nature.”
Hill said police needed information from the community to track down the arsonists behind the two attacks.
Detectives are now combing through CCTV from the home owners and surrounding neighbourhood.
“At this point in time, motive remains a mystery to us,” Hill said.
“The family are being very, very co-operative with police, supplying as much information as they can so we can progress the investigation.”
Police do not know why the family have been targeted.
They encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
