Significant delays on M1 north of Sydney after woman killed on motorway

By Angus Dalton

A woman was struck and killed by a car shortly after a four-vehicle crash that shut down the M1 on the Central Coast for hours on Sunday afternoon.

Three cars and a truck collided in the southbound lane of the Pacific Motorway and, about 1.30pm, emergency services were called to the scene by witnesses who said a woman had been hit by a car in the northbound lanes.

The woman died at the scene. Police have set up a crime scene but are not treating her death as suspicious.

Another woman who sustained minor injuries in the preceding crash was taken to Gosford Hospital. The other drivers and passengers weren’t injured but were treated for shock, police said.

The M1 closed in both directors for hours but as of 5.30pm one of three northbound lanes had reopened along with all southbound lanes. The crash caused hour-long delays and heavy traffic remained late on Sunday afternoon, according to Live Traffic.

Earlier on Sunday, two people were airlifted to hospital after another crash on the Central Coast.

A sedan and a utility vehicle had a head-on collision that trapped the 27-year-old male driver of the sedan for an hour before emergency services could free him.

The man and a 19-year-old female passenger of the other vehicle were airlifted to hospital, both in a serious but stable condition.

In a separate incident on Sunday a 27-year-old motorbike rider died at the scene of a crash in south-west Sydney.

Police were called to the intersection of Cleopatra Drive and Julius Road in Rosemeadow, where the motorbike and a car collided about midday.

The 27-year-old man died at the scene before emergency services had arrived. The 33-year-old woman driving the car sustained minor injuries and was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for drug and alcohol testing.
