Police believe a man who was stabbed in his western Sydney home by a gang of three intruders who then set his house on fire late on Saturday was attacked by mistake.
Emergency services were called to Ringrose Avenue at Greystanes about 11.15pm on Saturday night, after reports of a fire in a granny flat.
When officers from Cumberland police area command arrived at the scene, they found 45-year-old resident Warren Scott bleeding from stab wounds and the flat alight.
Neighbour Luke Hackett told Nine News he tried to use his garden hose to douse the flames, while Janice Dennis said she called triple 0 twice – first, when she saw the flames, then again when she saw Mr Scott “with all the blood all over him”.
Chief Inspector Adam Phillips told reporters on Sunday three men forced entry and then obtained a knife from inside the home, which they used to assault the resident.
“It’s extremely serious, we’ve got a person who’s received a number of stab wounds and is still currently in hospital,” Chief Inspector Phillips said.
He said the suspects, who police believe targeted Mr Scott’s home in a case of mistaken identity, were all “quite large” males wearing hooded jumpers.
Police investigating the violent incident are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact Granville Police or Crime Stoppers.
