A criminal who stole from drug dealers, led police on a month-long manhunt and had a history of violence, was allegedly stabbed to death by his daughter near Maitland in the NSW Hunter region on Saturday.
Police found Michael John Carroll, 51, with stab wounds to his stomach at a home in Tenambit about 7.20pm.
Paramedics tried to save him but he died at the scene.
Carroll's daughter, Maddison Hickson, was charged with murder. Ms Hickson, 23, did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused in Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday.
Port Stephens-Hunter Police District crime manager Detective Acting Inspector Ranald Urquhart said no weapon had been recovered. He added that there were other people at the home when the incident occurred and they had been assisting police with their inquiries.
"At this stage, we don't know what has led to the incident and that is currently subject to ongoing investigation," Acting Inspector Urquhart said.
"We will be conducting ongoing canvassing in the area, looking for any information people might be able to provide in terms of what they have seen – any CCTV or mobile phone footage that anyone might have."
A crime scene has been established at the home, which is being forensically examined. Detectives have commenced an investigation under Strike Force Creekborough.
Carroll had a history of violence and crime. In 2014, he was the subject of a major police manhunt for several months. Police would eventually find him in a roof cavity wearing a lady's pink beanie.
He was wanted for breaking into drug dealers' homes in the Maitland area – armed with knives and swords – to steal drugs.
At the time, police said Carroll had a history of violence and often stayed with friends in Rutherford, Cessnock and Metford.
In 2016, Carroll pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after bashing one man with a baseball bat before taking a pair of pliers to his fingers, toes and testicles.
In a bid to stop the attack, the victim offered his attackers, which included Carroll, his key card and PIN number. Two other people went and withdrew $150 while the offenders held the victim in the house.
Ms Hickson's matter returns to court on Wednesday, January 20.
