Hunt for ute after man bashed in Byron home invasion

By Jessica McSweeney

An elderly man was left with serious injuries to his face and hands after two men ransacked his home near Byron Bay – now police are on the hunt for a ute seen in the area.

About 10.30pm on a Thursday last November, two men armed with a bat and a knife stormed into a home on Dalley Street, Mullumbimby. A 78-year-old man was home at the time.

The two men demanded money and assaulted the older man with the bat and knife, leaving him seriously injured.

The two attackers abandoned the man after the bashing and ransacked his home before fleeing with several watches, car keys and DVDs.

The man was given medical attention by paramedics and taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police have been investigating the break-in for almost a year, but no arrests have been made. In a bid to identify the men responsible, detectives have released footage of a white ute seen in the area near the time of the attack.

Detectives want to speak with the driver or anyone who can identify its occupants.

“This is a particularly disturbing crime, and we believe someone in the community can point us in the direction of those responsible,” Tweed/Byron Police District Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer said.
