By Georgina Mitchell

A four-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after falling out of an apartment window in Sydney's south.

Paramedics went to a home on George Street at Mortdale just before 2pm on Friday after reports that a child had fallen about eight metres from the window.

Four crews, including a specialist medical team, were sent to the scene.

They treated the boy for a suspected head injury before he was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital in a stable condition.

Inspector Garren Constable from NSW Ambulance said bystanders and police did a "great job" to look after the boy until paramedics arrived.

"Injuries from falls like this have the potential to cause external injuries, but it’s the potential serious internal injuries that cause us the most concern," Inspector Constable said.

"These kind of accidents can happen in seconds, so it’s important to take extra care at home especially during the school holidays."
