Bondi hit twice in weekend of antisemitic attacks

By Jessica McSweeney

A man allegedly hurled antisemitic abuse at a woman from a Bondi home, and a group of women were targeted in a suspected antisemitic egging in two separate incidents in Sydney’s iconic beachside suburb.

About 7.40 on Saturday morning, a woman was walking along Flood Street when she alleges she was targeted by a man standing in the front yard of a home. The 21-year-old man allegedly yelled antisemitic abuse at her.

The woman flagged down officers connected to Strike Force Pearl, which investigates antisemitic incidents, who later arrested the man in a unit on Bondi Road.

He was taken to Newtown police station, where he was charged with stalking and intimidation with the intent of physical harm. He was also charged with property damage over an unrelated incident in Newtown and breach of bail.

The man also had warrants against him for domestic violence and shoplifting offences. He will appear in Newtown Local Court on Monday.

At 9.30 on Saturday night, a group of women were walking near Bondi Beach when another group pelted them with eggs.

About 30 minutes later, a silver Mazda crashed into a kerb. Three young men fled the scene and were unable to be located by police.

Police allege they found a jerry can and a carton of eggs inside the car.

“They were set upon by what we believe are the individuals from that silver Mazda,” Detective Superintendent Darren Newman said.

Newman did not say if the young women were Jewish but said police believed they were targeted in an antisemitic attack because of what they were wearing.

On Sunday morning, police discovered yet another act of antisemitic vandalism, this time in Kingsford and Randwick, with multiple cars and garages spray-painted with slurs.

Police are still hunting for the people responsible. The arrest of the 21-year-old man alleged to have intimidated the woman in Bondi this weekend brings the total number of individuals charged under Strike Force Pearl to 12.
