Call Out
I found David Meagher’s story about the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of his high school teacher very disturbing [July 29]. What could be lower than an adult in a position of authority sexually abusing a child – a child who was already going through hell in high school because of constant bullying and teasing because he was different? The line in which the teacher invited 13-year-old Meagher to call him “Des” was particularly creepy. Meagher described this as a “deliberate attempt at affability and a way to counteract the power imbalance between us”. In short, a way for an adult to ingratiate a child and manipulate him. It takes bravery to report these crimes to police, further bravery to go through the court system. It was satisfying to read that, in the end, the teacher served time in prison for his crimes.

Two of Us
Your story on talented artists Louise Jennison and Gracia Haby [July 29] shone a light on a remarkable relationship. From their love of animals (especially flying foxes) to their shared art projects, it seems that their “One of Us” - four legs, four arms and two heads – just may be the secret ingredient to their deep and abiding relationship.

Modern Guru
Danny Katz, I have enjoyed your column for as long as I can remember reading Good Weekend. It is a highlight every Saturday and more often than not, I find myself laughing out loud. This weekend’s was particularly good [July 29, Golf takes Balls] and prompted me to send this email of thanks and appreciation. You are the master of wit, with a subtle moral message – you definitely are The Guru.

Take Two
This was a beautiful article. As a 75-year-old North supporter, it rewards me personally that my football club that I have loved for so long is in great hands. You ladies are incredible, and I congratulate you from my heart. Go the ’Roos. kma
What sound philosophies from two women in what has been male territory for so long. Good luck to them both. Jenni
This article gives an amazing insight into these two women. I felt pride and emotion at the attitudes and impact that they’ve had and will continue to have. North are blessed to be given such people to direct their present and future. Paul
Proud to have them as the leaders of our beloved North Melbourne Football Club! Ashley Sevior
The fashion snobs embracing the puffer jacket
I find the puffer jacket too hot for a Sydney winter. With wool jackets and coats, the air circulates a little more and the fabric breathes, which beats wearing a plastic bag. Of course for colder weather in Canberra, a puffer jacket, preferably filled with duck down, is warranted. Megan
Puffer jackets are du jour items at the moment. Hopefully, this trend will pass otherwise plastics landfill will keep accumulating, with no end in sight in terms of disintegration. Pizzaz6
Warm, extremely comfortable and available in ultra-light for a Sydney winter to super warm for north European winters. Fitted styles do away with the Michelin Man look. What’s not to like? As mentioned in the article, no “eau de dog” smell on rainy days! davosee
Puffer jackets are horrible! Last year there was a letter in The Sydney Morning Herald by a Sydney woman who said she used to look forward to her winter trips to Melbourne to admire all the colourful coats, scarves and hats Melburnians sported, but that now it’s universal dull, ugly puffer jackets. She was most understandably disappointed. dargie
