City hall Hinch: Derryn mulls run for Melbourne lord mayor

By Noel Towell

We haven’t heard from Human Headline Derryn Hinch for a while, and while that might be a major factor in the tale we’re about to relate, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover today, so let’s crack on.

Looks like the former newsman, pants man, convict and politician has designs on the office of lord mayor of Melbourne, currently occupied by Sally Capp, who, if Hinch is to be believed, might have some questions to ask around Town Hall, when she returns from holiday.

The former senator for Victoria – who turned 80 a couple of weeks back and will begin cancer treatment next month – was on the socials on Wednesday evening with this gem.

“Out of the blue,” Derryn wrote, “I have been asked by several senior city council people in Melbourne to run for lord mayor.

“What do you reckon? I love this city and it desperately needs a post-COVID reboot. Am I the person to do it?”

Gee, Derryn, we don’t know, but feel certain that the man himself will supply the answer before too long.

Meantime, who are these “senior city council people”? Our inquiries are just getting under way, but they’re clearly the type of outside-the-box-thinkers that Capp needs more of around her, although we’re not sure the lord mayor would see it like that.

As for Capp herself, the municipal grin, whose office has been contacted for comment, has not yet declared if she’s interested in another term when the city votes in October.
