Better Man – a biopic about English singer-songwriter Robbie Williams will be the first film to begin production on the new stage.

Directed and co-written by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, the film is touted as an ‘introspective look’ into the moments that shaped Williams both musically and personally.

Around 3700 square metres in size almost as large as three Olympic swimming pools - Sound Stage 6 was funded by the Victorian state government.

Actress Rachel Griffiths said she was excited to see the ‘state-of-the-art’ studio open in her home town, while Docklands Studios Melbourne chairman David Hanna said the new stage would “boost our fast-growing reputation as a go-to destination for international producers”.

Docklands Studios, just west of Melbourne’s CBD, have previously hosted high-profile film productions such as The Dressmaker and Where The Wild Things Are.

Sci-fi thriller Foe, starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, is currently shooting at the Melbourne film studio.
