Women's Twenty20 World Cup final LIVE: Australia v India at the MCG

Meg Lanning's all conquering side mark International Women's Day by claiming Australia fifth Twenty20 World Cup in front of 86,174 fans at the MCG.

Alyssa Healy set the tone for the game with a match-winning 75 off 39 balls. Her opening partner Beth Mooney capped off an excellent campaign in which she was crowned player of the tournament by making 78 off 54 balls.

They powered Australia to 4/184.

India were never in the hunt, collapsing early and losing wickets at a regular interval. They were dismissed for a paltry 99.

Megan Schutt and Jess Jonassen each claimed three wickets, while Deepti Sharma top-scored for the vanquished with 33.

Meg Lanning said her overriding emotion after the 2018 World Cup win was relief. Her feeling tonight is pride.

"To put our best performance on the biggest day of our careers is something I'm very proud of." - Australia captain Meg Lanning.

"It was tough definitely, especially after we lost that first game. There was a lot of expectation from the outside, and on the inside as well.

"We came into this tournament to win, no doubt about that. As soon as there was 90,000 people expected on the 'G we were hoping to be there. Just to get here was a significant achievement, there was definitely tough times."

And to think Australia won without their pace aces Ellyse Perry and Tayla Vlaeminck.

Perry injured her hamstring in Australia's last group game. Vlaeminck was withdrawn from Australia's squad on the eve of the first match.

Beth Mooney misses the player of the match award, takes out the player of the tournament award.

Mooney made 259 runs at just over 64 with a strike rate of 125. She made the most runs ever in a Twenty20 World Cup, including 78 off 54 balls in the final.

"I'm lost for words, the crowd has been amazing right throughout."

Alyssa Healy gets the gong for her agenda-setting 75 off 39 balls. And to think she was short of runs coming into the tournament.

"That was unbelievable, thank you everyone," Healy said.

"You cannot wipe the smile off my face one bit. Even if we lost the game I still would have been smiling. I never thought we would get an opportunity like this in my whole career. I thought maybe in 20 years' time."

The ease at which Australia won the final is in contrast to the hurdles they had to overcome just to get there.

They carried the hopes of a nation, and tournament organisers, who marketed the event on setting a new world record for a women's sporting event. This was heavily dependent on Australia making the final.

For much of the tournament, there were doubts as to whether they would even make the semis.

They lost strike bowler Tayla Vlaeminck on the eve of the tournament, were beaten by India on opening night and almost eliminated on day four.

After walking the tightrope to get to the semi-final, they beat the weather and South Africa to win a thrilling semi-final.

The world record of 90,185, set in the 1999 football World Cup final still stands but the crowd of 86,174 is impressive nonetheless. It is a new Australian record.

Meg Lanning is crying tears of joy. She claims a fifth World Cup, her first on home soil. She said yesterday it was going to be the biggest moment of her career, well, it's the crowning moment of a glorious career.

She joins Michael Clarke and Lyn Larsen as the only Australians to have led their side to World Cup glory on home soil.
