Lime launches 'major safety campaign' after first scooter death

Lime will unveil a "major Brisbane safety campaign" on Thursday morning, a week after the first death in Australia involving one of their scooters.

On Wednesday last week, a 50-year-old man fell off a scooter down the stairs near the Wheel of Brisbane, hit his head and was found in cardiac arrest. He died in hospital a day after the accident.

The company said in a statement it would speak about the importance of safe and respectful riding.

The fatally injured scooter rider was found by South Bank security staff, who called triple zero about 12.20am last Wednesday, May 8.

They began attempts to resuscitate him until specialist paramedics arrived and took over.

Through the efforts of bystanders and paramedics, the man's pulse returned and he was then rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman later that Thursday afternoon confirmed the Woolloongabba man had died.

Queensland Ambulance Service clinical director Tony Hucker said the Woolloongabba man suffered "traumatic head injuries" at the South Bank forecourt, despite wearing a helmet.

It was believed he did not brake in time and fell down the concrete stairs, hitting his head.

Police said the man rode the hired electric scooter south across the Victoria Bridge and onto the forecourt at South Bank, where he fell.

Lime analysed the data from the scooter involved and said they had ruled out a malfunction.

Lime has expanded to more than 100 markets worldwide and recorded 50 million rides since its inception in 2017.
