The storm:
Very large hail and a 141km/h wind gust were recorded in the Brisbane area, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. To put that in context, a Category 2 Tropical Cyclone has typical gusts over open flat land of 125-164 km/h.
Energex recorded 4000 lightning strikes between 3pm and 5.30pm, which is about one strike every two seconds.
The damage:
The storm caused havoc on the roads and public transport system, resulted in flash flooding and wide-spread property damage.
At 7pm: 88,153 customers had no electricity.
The State Emergency Service had received more than 1000 calls for help.
Three water pumps lost power, with Urban Utilities advising residents of Bracken Ridge, Kelvin Grove, and Seventeen Mile Rocks that they may lose water supply.
Police warn motorists to postpone non-essential travel because traffic congestion is hampering emergency crews' efforts to help those in need.
