Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, tennis player Ayan Broomfield.
How would you describe your style? When I was playing tennis, it was athleisure. Now, it’s sexy chic.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A two-tone pink Nike tennis dress I got after Serena Williams wore one like it in the 2013 US Open. I was obsessed. I told my parents I had to have it.
And the most recent addition? A green jumpsuit by Nigerian designer Andrea Iyamah.
What would you wear … on a first date? A black Wardrobe.NYC x Rosie Huntington-Whiteley pantsuit and heels … on a plane? An Aritzia sweatsuit with a hood … on the red carpet? I wear Off-White a lot. I like to make a splash.
What’s your favourite fashion era? The early 2000s for The Cheetah Girls and Juicy Couture velour-tracksuit vibes.
Who’s your favourite designer? LaQuan Smith is a visionary. His designs are on the sexier side, very colourful. I wore a brown bedazzled piece to the Victoria’s Secret fashion show that was hot but classy.
What’s your fragrance of choice? Kilian “Sunkissed Goddess”.
What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? A black Brunello Cucinelli blazer, Ferragamo kitten heels, and a cute Victoria’s Secret undergarment set.
Any go-to jewellery? A gold Cartier “Love” bracelet my boyfriend [US tennis player Frances Tiafoe] gave me with “Always and forever” engraved on it. A Bulgari “Tubogas” bracelet in yellow gold is another favourite piece.
Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? A Nike pink-leopard-print tennis dress when I was about seven. I wore it every day for school, I wore it to tournaments, I even wore it for Halloween when I went as Serena Williams. My mum could not get me out of it.
What was your first fashion moment? My biggest fashion moment was attending the Vogue World event in Paris in June. I wore a black Jacquemus dress I fell in love with. That same week, I sat front row at the Paris Fashion Week Hermès SS25 show, which was amazing.
And your worst fashion mistake? It happened last year when I attended the GQ Man of the Year Awards and wore the wrong underwear for my dress. I didn’t realise the camera flashes made it see-through until I looked at the pictures the next morning!
What’s on your wish list? An Hermès “Birkin Himalaya” crocodile bag.
Is there something you would never wear? No. If you’re able to see the beauty in things, rock it and let your personality shine through. Anything can look good.
Is there a current trend you like? I’m loving the bow era – so cute and playful.
What do you sleep in? I like a slip robe. I travel a lot, and I also love a plush hotel robe. I’ve been known to book hotels because they have nice robes.
What shoes do you wear the most often? White Wilson tennis shoes. I need something super comfortable for my active lifestyle.
Who is your favourite fashion icon? Model Jasmine Tookes is effortlessly chic – her mum is her stylist. If my mum dressed me, it would be a trainwreck.
What do you wear on a typical working day? I start off in a tennis outfit by Lacoste, Wilson or Lululemon. If I have a meeting, I’ll wear a pantsuit. If I’m attending a tennis match, I’ll go for a fitted dress, maybe something by PatBO or Cos. You can dress up a bit more for the tennis now.
What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? Black leggings with a black tank, blazer and my kitten heels. It gives off-duty model vibes; I can run errands, go shopping or meet a friend for coffee and be comfortable but still look elevated and chic.
Ayan Broomfield is a Piper-Heidsieck ambassador.
