A hair colourist’s favourite scent and must-have grooming tool
Each fortnight, Stephanie Darling gets inside the head of an industry expert or media personality. This week, she talks to hair-colourist George Giavis.
“Looking good, feeling good and smelling good keeps me feeling confident.”
George Giavis’s dedication to his one-on-one hair-colouring craft in his bespoke salon goes above and beyond the usual devotion to duty. He is always on call for his loyal clients and his salon, The Blonde Room – all gold taffeta and gilded mirrors – even had a cameo in the miniseries Underbelly: Vanishing Act.
What I’m loving right now My mother’s Greek cooking: moussaka and galaktoboureko, a semolina custard in filo pastry which my clients love.
Beauty icon David Bowie as the androgynous Ziggy Stardust coming to Earth to deliver a message of hope.
The rule I live by Never kiss and tell.
Best grooming tip Looking good, feeling good and smelling good keeps me feeling confident.
Favourite colour Blonde!
Must-have grooming tool Babor Collagen Booster ampoules (wonderlab.com.au, $108). They are vegan, sustainable and a great skin booster. And my go-to scent, which is Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir Cologne (jomalone.com.au, $229). It was Dad’s favourite. He was my hero growing up and taught me everything I know about life and business.
Favourite exercise routine Sumo walking. It’s a great workout for your glutes and quad muscles.
I never leave the house without Calling my mum. We are so very close and I love her dearly.

Winter skin gets parched from the elements, both indoors and out – think chilling winds and ramped-up heating. That’s why you should keep a hydrating mist close at hand. Not only will it keep skin calm and hydrated, it’s also great as a make-up refresher.

The Nudestix Beachy Nude Kit. Credit: Jennifer Soo
It feels like way too long since I have featured one of my favourite make-up accessories, the ultra-versatile chubby stick. The limited-edition Nudestix Beachy Nude Kit (sephora.com.au, $43) covers all the bases – eyes, lips and cheeks – interchangeably.
Ask Steph
How do I keep my long hair in good condition?
Get it cut regularly. The ends have been styled and coloured repeatedly, so they get dry and frizzy. Ask your stylist to snip off a centimetre every two months; as hair grows faster than that, you won’t lose any length.
