The secret lives of Tassie’s swinging couples

Swinging has been around for decades but it's long been a scene many find taboo. But date is showing it’s growing more popular -  and Tasmanians are getting on board...

New statistics from dating site RedHotPie has seen a 231 per cent increase in couple profiles in Tasmania over the last five years, as well as a 243 per cent increase in singles profiles.

There’s hundreds of couples across the state sharing the fun, and two have decided to speak to The Mercury to lift the lid on what is a foreign world for many.

Their names have been changed and they are not depicted in images to protect their identities.

David and Sally* are in their early 50s and have been in the lifestyle for five years. They say they’ve always been a very sexual and connected married couple.

We are empty nesters and decided this was a lifestyle we wanted to explore and incorporate fun during our holidays and travel adventures with like-minded couples and singles.

Sally says swingers didn’t necessarily have a greater relationship than monogamous couples.

But she said the scene possibly provided “more open and broader conversations, less jealousy, insecurities and judgement”.

Another couple, who we’ll call Mark and Jess, say they’ve been swinging since their early 20’s - they’re now in their early 40’s.  They refer to the activity as consensual play with others.

People see swinging as an all in orgy. It’s nothing like that. It’s consensual play with others. Plenty of swingers don’t actually swap partners for sex. They get off on chatting, meeting others and watching.
