Tasmania’s worst crime-ridden districts revealed

IS YOUR SUBURB ON THE LIST?

From stolen cars to burglaries, shootings and drug deals done in broad daylight, new police data has revealed Tasmania’s most crime-ridden regions.

CRIME RATES

Launceston’s crime rate for 2020/21 was by far the worst police district for every single type of offence, often double or triple that of its counterparts.

Launceston

A significant proportion of all Tasmanian vehicle thefts take place in the Launceston police district, with 315 car burglaries per 10,000 people.

Launceston City Councillor Paul Spencer said his son recently had two motorbikes stolen by somebody driving an unregistered ute.

Cr Spencer said lack of opportunities, affordable housing, and a general lack of discipline was fuelling the crime in the region.

Drug use is a big problem in Launceston with all these criminals, especially since when they get caught they get let out in a few weeks. The jails are full, so what hope is there?

-Cr Paul Spencer

Launceston topped the state in property offences per person, more than double that of the second place district of Hobart.

Glenorchy is the second-worst district in the state when it comes to home burglary offences as well as robbery offences.
