Computers, phones, chess and BBQs: Inside Hobart's new $85m prison

Words: David Killick | Producer: Louise Starkey

Gone are the days of dark, small cells and limited phone calls. Tasmania's newest prison is here — and it's as far away from looking like a dungeon as possible.

The $85m Hobart Remand Centre at Risdon is light, airy and designed to be a "safe and welcoming" place for prisoners awaiting trial and those monitoring them.

Here’s a look at what’s inside.

Each of the 156 cells in the complex has a computer and a phone so inmates can stay in touch with their families and their lawyers.

Technology

Every aspect of the project, from the furniture, to the lighting and the colour scheme, has been carefully chosen — it's designed to be light, airy and colourful.

Interiors

Unlike many dungeon-like facilities across the world, inmates will be able to access a fixed outdoor gym, garden and barbecue facilities, and larger than life boardgames for entertainment.

Activities

The state of the art facility is designed to make people feel safe, settled and welcomed, in a bid to help them kick-start their journey to addressing their offending behaviour and start to rehabilitate.

Purpose

It gives prisoners access to the type of services and the type of engagement that they need to feel safe, to feel settled, and then start almost from day one on what are their individual rehabilitation journeys.
