Breakthrough in fight against 'devastating' wombat disease

Tasmanian researchers are celebrating a major step in the fight against an illness affecting bare-nosed wombats.

Sarcoptic mange causes extreme suffering among the Australian marsupials and is often difficult to cure.

It's a skin disease caused by mites.Without treatment, it can result in severe infection and death.

Now, there's hope a newly approved medication can help save many wombats.

Trials are launching across Tasmania, Victoria, the ACT and parts of New South Wales and South Australia.

A long-lasting flea treatment usually given to dogs has been approved for limited use on wombats across Australia.

Lead researcher Scott Carver said it had taken years to reach this point, and believed the trial would have huge benefits for Aussie wombats.

The big difference with this treatment compared to other drugs is that it is much longer lasting —lasting about six times longer than other treatments.
