A YOUNG man captured on video seemingly being swarmed by armed police as he allegedly wielded a large knife outside a pharmacy has been refused bail by a Hobart court.

The footage, which went viral on social media on Wednesday and broadcast nationally, appears to show Berriedale youth John Saether, 20, being knocked to the ground by an unmarked police car before he is restrained and punched by officers.

The video also seemingly captures about six police officers pointing guns and screaming at Mr Saether.

Police allege that Mr Saether attempted an armed robbery of the Montrose Guardian Pharmacy about 9.05am on Wednesday.

He has also been accused of four counts of aggravated assault, one count of common assault and one count of unlawfully carrying a dangerous article in a public place.

Mr Saether appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon, supported by his mother who sat in the public gallery, to apply for bail.

However his application was refused by Magistrate Robert Webster, and Mr Saether will remain in custody until at least the end of the month.

The young man was not injured during Wednesday’s incident but two police officers subsequently received medical treatment.

Tasmania’s Police Professional Standards has advised it will undertake a review of the incident.

The matter will return to court later this month.
