A YOUNG woman who tried to smuggle $150,000 worth of drugs in her bra on a flight into Hobart has been released from prison to forge a new life in Tasmania.

Alexandra Rose Kobelke, 27, was jailed for a minimum of 16 months from March 2019 after pleading guilty to trafficking ice and cocaine from NSW to Tasmania over a 13-month period.

Last July, Tasmania’s Department of Public Prosecutions failed to increase her head sentence of two years and eight months on the basis it was “manifestly inadequate” and should be increased to deter other would-be drug traffickers.

The Parole Board of Tasmania has now published its decision into releasing Kobelke from jail as of November 9 last year, noting she’d been described as a “polite and friendly inmate” and had been kept in minimum security.

The board said while she became eligible for parole in July last year, her applications were adjourned because she didn’t have suitable accommodation.

It said she served her term “compliantly and cooperatively” working at a “high standard” as a leading hand in the kitchen and undertaking certificates in cleaning operations and salon work.

“She was not the ‘kingpin’ of the operation but received money and/or drugs for performing her part,” the board said.

“It is the applicant’s intention to not return to New South Wales but to forge a new life in Tasmania including having her father travel to the state to join her.

“The applicant has been drug abstinent upon her incarceration and is motivated to remain so.”
