THE group representing Tasmanian women lawyers has lashed the lack of a transparent process around concerns about judicial behaviour, after a Supreme Court Judge was seen kissing his Associate in a Hobart nightclub.

As revealed by the Mercury, the incident involving Justice Gregory Geason occurred at the Grand Poobah following the Law Society of Tasmania’s “Opening of the Legal Year” dinner.

Justice Geason has been counselled by Chief Justice Alan Blow and the Associate, who cannot be named for privacy reasons, has been provided support.

There is no suggestion of inappropriate conduct on the part of the Associate.

In a statement released on Friday, the Tasmanian Women Lawyers Association raised concerns the process around the incident was not transparent.

“We call upon parliament and the judiciary to implement a judicial commission, similar to models used in other Australian states, which would allow a clear process for all complaints regarding judicial behaviour that is open and allows for procedural fairness for all parties,” the association said.

“Without such a process being available in Tasmania, one of the few options available for the resolution of such allegations is to call for the judge concerned to resign. We understand that this option has not been taken in this case.”

Multiple members of the legal community who spoke to the Mercury about the Justice Geason incident did so on the condition of anonymity.

In response to questions from the Mercury about Justice Geason’s status and whether any further action would be taken by the Chief Justice, spokesman for the Supreme Court said “the court will not be responding to further questions on this matter”.
