LEGISLATION overhauling the government’s ability to keep dangerous and violent criminals locked up for life has passed through parliament and will become law.

However, the Dangerous Criminals and High Risk Offenders Bill 2020 has come too late to lock up “psychopath” murderer and rapist Jamie John Curtis for good.

Attorney-General Elise Archer this week announced the Bill had passed state parliament, removing “unnecessary restrictions” requiring that a declaration could only be made by a convicting or sentencing judge.

Curtis, who murdered Glenorchy man Dean Allie, repeatedly raped his fiance and abducted a 15-year-old schoolgirl in 1986, was released on parole in January this year.

Ms Archer said the legislative reform was one of a range of changes putting the “wellbeing of victims and survivors front and centre”.
