How do juries decide a verdict?

SEVERAL people have been charged following a neighbourhood dispute allegedly leading to a man being held down, punched and stabbed.

About 3am Saturday, Tasmania Police said a dispute at Riverside’s Benjamin Street had escalated, resulting in the alleged assault of a 24-year-old man from Huonville and 23-year-old woman from Riverside.

Later that morning, police will allege three people returned to the residence about 9am, leading to the Huonville man sustaining cuts to his hands and knees after being held down, punched and stabbed.

He remains in a stable condition at the Launceston General Hospital.

Police will also allege the Riverside woman was chased down and dragged to the ground by two people, then punched several times to the head. Her phone was also believed to have been stolen.

A 26-year-old man and 33-year-old female, both from Riverside, were both charged and set to appear before an out-of-hours session of the Court of Petty Sessions on Sunday morning.

A 16-year-old from Riverside was charged with wounding and aggravated robbery and a 14-year-old from Ravenswood was charged with obstructing and abusing police alongside drug-related offences, with both bailed to appear at Launceston’s Youth Justice Court on December 17.

A black Holden sedan was allegedly damaged during the incident, with police seeking information that could lead to the driver of a white or silver Toyota Prado with bull bar and snorkel.

Police believe this was an isolated incident with all parties known to each other.
