A GREATER Hobart general store worker said he was worried and afraid after thieves robbed the shop of essential items in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The worker, who has chosen to remain anonymous for fear of a repeated theft, said minor damage occurred and essential items including hand sanitiser, toilet paper, soft drinks, rice and bread were stolen between 3.35am and 5.45am.

“I’m not sure why we are targeted, but the current hard situation makes people more aggressive and panicked,” he said.

He said all of the staff were “so disappointed”.

“Our owner was crying,” he said.

“He has been operating this business around ten years, but this [has] not happened before.

“We are worried about our safety, and moreover we cannot trust anyone anymore.”

He said police had taken photos and were investigating the incident.

He said he hoped the thieves would be caught and charged.
