GERMAN national Tobias Pick has been named as the man charged with the murder of a Launceston woman on Boxing Day.
Police have also revealed the identity of the 49-year-old woman who was found dead as
Jingai Zhang.
Ms Zhang was an Australian permanent resident of Chinese origins.
Tasmania Police confirmed the identity of Pick, who appeared in an out-of-hours session of the Court of Petty Sessions on Monday night where he was charged with the murder of a 49-year-old woman from Launceston, as well as one count of stealing.
He was remanded in custody to reappear in court Wednesday morning.
Pick was arrested yesterday along with a 25-year-old woman, also from Germany, who was interviewed and later released unconditionally.
According to Tasmania Police, Pick is from Germany and has been in Australia on a working visa for at least several months.
The victim was discovered in the bedroom of her Wellington St home about 8.30pm on Saturday, following a triple-0 call reporting the death of a woman inside the property.
A witness, attending police, and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the woman but she was declared dead at the scene.
Police have yet to reveal the cause of death or the name of the victim but said a post mortem confirmed the woman had been murdered, and the house remains cordoned off as investigations continue.
Another man was also arrested by police on a side street near the deceased woman’s home shortly after the incident but was later released.
Police have called for anyone with information relating to the incident to get in touch, particularly anyone who may have seen people on foot in the area on Saturday night, or have dashcam footage of the street, including surrounding streets, in the area in the three hours up until 9pm.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Launceston Police on 131 444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au
