Police have issued a stern warning for Tasmanian punters celebrating Grand Final weekend, saying they will be cracking down on rowdy revellers – urging them to think twice before getting behind the wheel.

It comes as Tasmanian Paralympic rowing champion Alexandra Viney shared a grave reminder of the dangers of drink-driving ahead of Saturday’s game.

Viney, 31, told NewsCorp on Wednesday about her harrowing story.

She was just 18, a promising young rower and about to celebrate her high school graduation when she was involved in a high-speed car accident caused by a drunk driver.

The trauma changed her life forever – and had lasting impacts on her family and relationships with friends.

The accident left her with impairments to her left elbow, forearm and hand.

It would be eight years before she got back in a boat – a move that would lead to her forging a successful career as a full-time para-athlete.

As reported in the Herald Sun, she wants her experience to reinforce the message about being safe on the roads this long Grand Final weekend.

Tasmania Police on Thursday echoed the sentiment.

“Police urge anyone celebrating the AFL Grand Final this Saturday to do so responsibly, and if consuming alcohol, have a plan to get home safely,” Commander Jason Elmer said.

“We know that driving under the influence is one of the Fatal Five contributing factors to fatal and serious crashes on our road.

“I urge people to never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or if you’ve taken drugs, you’ll be putting more than just your life on the line.

“Police will be patrolling the roads and entertainment precincts to ensure everyone is safe.”

“We want everyone to enjoy their Grand Final day celebrations and get home safely.”
