Person free after crash at Upper Castra

May 19: A man has been flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital after being trapped in a vehicle following a crash in the state’s North-West.

Police said emergency services were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Sunday morning at bushland track off Swamp Road at Upper Castra.

The Westpac Rescue Chopper was deployed and stationed at nearby Sprent Primary School as ambulance, police and SES crews worked to free the man from the wreckage.

Police said emergency crews were still on the scene and that investigations into the cause of the crash were underway.

Man mowed down after dispute, police say

May 19, 12:20am: Police say a 52-year-old man was mowed down by a man he knew, over a dispute at Devonport on Saturday afternoon.

It’s alleged a 42-year-old Spreyton man intentionally drove a Toyota HiLux at the other man, at Rose Court, after a dispute.

Police say the incident occurred after a dispute between the two men, who are known to each other.

The victim, from Devonport, was rushed to the Launceston General Hospital with chest injuries and is in a stable condition.

Police say the Spreyton man was charged with assault and driving with a suspended licence.

He’ll front court today.

Guns, drugs uncovered in North West raid

May 16: Police uncovered quantities of ice and cannabis, cash and firearms in a targeted raid in the state’s North West.

Police searched a residence at Shorewell Park on Tuesday, uncovering the drugs, as well as a replica revolver, and a pistol-shaped gel blaster.

Authorities believe the cash seized is the proceeds of crime.

Two men, a 44-year-old from Shorewell Park and a 27-year-old man from Round Hill, have been charged over the incident and will appear in court in July.

Ute crashes into train, pushed along tracks

May 15, 9am: Police are investigating the crash on Stony Rise Rd, Devonport involving a ute and train.

It’s believed the ute entered the railway and was struck by the train and pushed along the trucks.

TasRail are now in attendance managing the scene and a number of diversions remain in place.

Earlier 8.30am: Emergency services were alerted early this morning of reports a ute was hit by a train in the state’s North-West.

Police officers say work is underway to clear the tracks at Stony Rise Rd, Devonport.

Diversions have been in place while that work occurs, with Stony Rise Rd blocked between Devonport Rd and Durkins Rd.

Northbound traffic is being diverted down Devonport Road and south bound traffic diverted down Durkins Road onto Devonport Road.

Officers said no serious injuries were reported at this stage.

This is the second train-related incident in the past few weeks. On April 30, a semi-trailer truck collided with a train at Westbury.

Pedestrian suffers significant injuries after traffic crash

May 15, 9.40am: A section of the Brooker Hwy will be closed to northbound motorists to allow crash investigators to investigate the scene of yesterday’s pedestrian crash.

Between Bowen Rd and Derwent Park Rd will be closed for around 20 minutes from 10am.

Police say a 38-year-old Glenorchy man sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle yesterday.

Officers say initial inquiries suggest the man had attempted to cross the highway in heavy traffic conditions.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to mandatory blood testing.

May 14, 4.30pm: Police have provided an update saying the pedestrian involved in a traffic crash in Hobart’s northern suburbs is seriously injured.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the crash outside the Brooker Inn.

Motorists are advised that the crash occurred in the north bound lanes at the location.

3.25pm: A pedestrian involved in a traffic crash has reportedly avoided suffering any life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services are on the scene of the incident involving a pedestrian and vehicle outside the Brooker Inn on the Brooker Hwy, Derwent Park.

Officers say injuries sustained were only minor in nature.

Traffic may be impacted in the area, and motorists have been asked to approach with caution or avoid the area until the scene is cleared.

Allegations gun fired into roof in a home burglary

May 14, 9am: Police have charged two people after hunting them down following an alleged armed robbery at a Mole Creek residence on Monday afternoon.

Police allege the incident involved a man and a woman, who entered a home and have been accused of threatening the occupants with a firearm in a targeted incident.

Officers accused one of the offenders of discharging a firearm into the roof of the residence before the pair stole several items and left the scene in a vehicle.

One resident reportedly received minor injuries in this incident.

Police say they were assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to conduct a search for the vehicle which was located in Bishopsbourne.

Officers said several firearms, a quantity of cash and drugs were found in a search of the vehicle.

Further searches of the area found the woman inside a home at Bishopsbourne where police allege she threatened the residents. The residents were reportedly not physically injured.

Police say the woman was taken into custody.

Drones were used to assist a further search, which police say located the man in a hedged area at Bishopsbourne where he was also taken into custody.

The 36-year-old man from Ravenswood has been charged with breach firearms prohibition order, Evade police, and unlicensed driving.

The 26-year-old woman from Launceston faces numerous charges including aggravated armed robbery, firearms related offences, trafficking in controlled substances and driving offences.

Both have been detained to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

Car and motorbike crash on Eastern Shore

May 14, 9.15am: Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a crash involving a car and a motorbike on Hobart’s Eastern Shore.

The incident happened near Zap Fitness on Clarence St, Howrah.

At this stage no serious injuries have been reported.

Police target illegal poaching, seize firearms and ammunition

May 13, 3.15pm: A crack down on illegal poaching on the weekend resulted in five firearms and a quantity of ammunition reportedly seized, police say.

Senior Sergeant Mark Williams said a targeted traffic patrol was in response to recent reports of illegal poaching of both sheep and deer.

Crews from Oatlands, Liawenee and Kempton conducted the patrols over the weekend between Bothwell and Liawenee.

“Police intercepted multiple vehicles and checked all relevant licences and firearms to ensure they complied with storage requirements while travelling,” Senior Sergeant Williams said.

“During the evening, police intercepted a vehicle containing four men who were all in possession of loaded firearms. Several hundred rounds of live ammunition and spent cartridges were also inside the vehicle.”

He said police seized the five firearms and all the ammunition from the vehicle.

The four men are set to be proceeded against in relation to firearm and ammunition offences.

“This is a timely reminder that all firearm licence holders must strictly adhere to all firearms laws and adhere to best practice relating to the safe storage and transport of firearms and ammunition in vehicles,” he said.

Ute crash pulls down multiple power lines

Update 2pm: Police report a person has been transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a single vehicle crash.

The incident resulted in a couple power lines being pulled down, which cut off power to dozens of residents.

May 13, 1pm: A driver is lucky to escape without serious injuries after his ute pulled down multiple powerlines in the state’s North-West.

Emergency services remained at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Arthur and Cardigan Sts, Somerset an hour after it was reported just after 12pm.

The incident has cut off electricity to dozens of Somerset residents, with 62 customers expected to be without power 8pm, TasNetworks estimates.

Significant delays expected after multi-vehicle crash

Updated 11.15am: Tasmania Police have confirmed the Tasman Highway causeway has been cleared from the earlier crash.

They did not provide any further information on the number of vehicles involved or any injuries.

May 13, 10.20am: Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on the Pittwater Causeway between the golf course and Midway Point, in the state’s South.

Reportedly the eastbound lane is blocked.

Police say the extent of injuries is unknown at this stage.

Motorists should expect significant delays and have been asked to avoid the area while the scene is cleared.

An alternative route is via Richmond.

Teenager charged with aggravated robbery at Northern business

May 13 10am: Police report charging a teenager with aggravated robbery over an alleged incident at a Launceston business late last month.

Officers say they charged the 17-year-old boy following an investigation into the matter at Racecourse Cres on April 24.

They allege a staff member received non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say investigations are continuing and urge anyone who witnessed youths acting suspiciously in the area of Racecourse Cres, particularly near the Kmart Shopping Centre Complex around 6.20pm on that day to contact police.
