Man dead after Piper’s River fire

July 6

Updated: A 25-year-old man tried to rescue his father from flames which engulfed their Pipers River home, but sadly he could not be saved.

The house fire on Pipers River Road was called in today about 7am, and when firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was fully alight.

It was confirmed the man had died inside the residence before lunch time.

The deceased is believed to be a 55-year-old man.

“My information is the male lived there with his 25-year-old son and his son was home at the time of the fire and actually tried to reach his dad to help him but unfortunately was pushed back by the fire,” Tasmania Police acting inspector Andrew Hanson said.

“The fire was obviously extreme enough for him not to be able to go and help his father … [he] simply couldn’t reach the area where his father was and had to leave the residence himself through a window.

“It’s obviously a very challenging time when something like this happens, so tragic and unexpected.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family in this time.”

The son received medical attention at the scene and did not sustain any injuries as a result of the fire.

Investigators from Tasmania Fire Service are still working to determine the cause of the fire but are satisfied it is not suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
