Footy score board caught fire at rec ground

May 12, 8am: A score board reportedly caught on fire at the West Ulverstone Recreation Ground, the home of the NWFA’s West Ulverstone Football Club.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at 8.30pm on Saturday.

Officers say on attendance it was discovered the small building that was alight was used as a score board at the grounds.

They say the fire was extinguished by the Tasmania Fire Service.

Police say investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and have asked the public to come forward with any information.

Crime scene declared after sudden death at Central Highlands village

Update: Police have identified a man who died suddenly at Hamilton as a 41-year-old Strahan man.

After establishing a crime scene, authorities now say the death is not being treated as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

May 10, 11:15am: The sudden death of a man at a village in the Central Highlands overnight has led to a crime scene being established, as police investigate what happened.

Authorities were called to a home in Hamilton after 7pm on Thursday, and shortly after they arrived a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet formally identified the man.

A crime scene was declared and police remain at the scene.

Five charged with trafficking in two weeks

May 10, 10:40am: A 70 year old man is one of five people charged with trafficking over the last two weeks, after three seizures on the state’s North West Coast.

Three people, a 48-year-old Frankford man, 47-year-old Devonport man, and a 70-year-old East Devonport man were charged with trafficking after police seized 38 cannabis plants, seeds and cash at a Frankford property.

In a separate incident, a 47-year-old Spreyton woman was also charged with trafficking, after police allegedly seized ice, cocaine, ecstasy, ephedrine and cannabis.

And in a third separate incident, a 38-year-old Burnie man was charged with trafficking following a 2kg seizure of cannabis.

Police say the seizures are not linked.

Tasmania Police detective inspector Michelle Elmer said though Tasmania had the lowest crime rate in the country, drugs were a big concern to police.

“Anyone seeking to profit by selling harmful drugs to Tasmanians should know that we will be targeting them and their activities,” she said.

“We take drug trafficking very seriously.”

Man’s quick escape after molotov cocktail hurled at his home

May 7, 5pm: Police have revealed a man was inside a house in Claremont when a molotov cocktail was hurled at the property, igniting a devastating blaze.

Investigations into the fire, which destroyed the home on Cadbury Road, are continuing, as police scoured the scene on Tuesday.

The man inside the property at the time of the incident was able to make a quick escape, and was not injured.

“The man saw the fire and evacuated uninjured,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

The man was the only person in the home.

The property could not be saved.

Earlier: Firefighters are investigating a ‘deliberately lit’ blaze which tore through a home in Claremont overnight.

Authorities were called to the scene at Cadbury Road about 8:40pm on Monday, arriving to find the property engulfed in flames.

Police later deemed the blaze deliberately lit and have been investigating this morning.

Traffic crash on Algona Road

May 7: Emergency services are at the scene of a two vehicle crash at Blackmans Bay.

The crash occurred on Algona Road before 11am this morning.

There were no injuries.

Algona Road towards Kingston has been closed off to the public, while authorities clear the scene.

Motorists should divert via Scarborough Ave.

Parked vehicle crashed into at a Woolworths carpark

Updated 3pm: Sadly, police have confirmed a man in his 80s has died during a crash at Woolworths Legana this afternoon.

Police believe it was the result of a medical episode.

No one else was reported injured in the crash.

May 6, 1pm: Emergency services have responded to an incident where a vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle at Woolworths Legana, in the state’s North.

Police say one person is receiving medical treatment at the scene.

Police make presence felt at Hobart’s party hotspots

May 6, 12pm: Tasmania Police were on the prowl this April at pubs and clubs across Hobart with the focus on patron behaviour within licence premises.

Inspector John Toohey confirmed 26 barring orders and 13 infringements had been issued across the month.

He said the focus was creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons.

“Barring orders are an essential tool in protecting the community by stopping individuals from entering licensed premises where their behaviour poses a risk to public safety or breaches liquor licensing laws,” Inspector Toohey said.

“Barring orders may be issued when a person is at-risk as a result of drinking alcohol; if they have committed an offence or behaved in an offensive or disorderly manner on or near a licensed premises; or there are reasonable grounds to do so.

“Infringements were issued for offences including act in violent, quarrelsome, disorderly manner on licensed/permit premises; person subject to Barring Order enter or attempt to enter relevant licensed/permit premises; and fail to leave licensed premises when required to do so.”

He said police were committed to working closely with venues to ensure compliance with liquor licensing legislation.
