Emergency services arrive to find unit filled with smoke

April 20, 11.10am: Emergency services are attending a unit fire at Bedford St, New Town.

On arrival crews reportedly found a unit full of smoke.

Tasmania Fire Service says an occupant of the unit is being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Crews from Hobart Fire Brigade were called out to the structure fire around 11am on Saturday.

The extent of the damage and cause of the fire at this stage is unknown.

Injuries unknown after crash at Deloraine

Updated: No serious injures were reported from the crash on Meander Rd, Deloraine.

Police say the incident has been cleared.

April 20, 11.10am: Police are on the scene of a motor vehicle crash on Meander Rd, Deloraine near Highland Lakes Rd.

At this stage police say injuries are unknown.

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.

Person injured after serious two vehicle crash on highway

Update 4.10pm: A person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the Bass Hwy, Latrobe.

Police and emergency services remain at the scene with diversions still in place.

3.45pm: Police and emergency services are on the scene of a serious two vehicle crash that has injured a person in the state’s North-West.

The incident occurred on the Bass Hwy, Latrobe, south of the roundabout.

Officers say the injured person is receiving medical treatment at the scene.

Diversions are in place for motorists to travel along Moriaty Rd and Gilbert St.

Two men accused of $83k worth of fuel fraud and stealing

2.30pm: Police allege two men have illegally obtained more than $83k worth of fuel illegally.

The men from Warrane, aged 32 and 36, have been charged with significant fraud and stealing matters.

Officers said the men were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a member of the public tipped off Glenorchy police.

Police said they were later charged with stealing and computer related fraud.

The pair have been remanded in custody to appear in court in May.

Police urged anyone who purchased cheap fuel — not from a licenced petrol station — in greater Hobart recently to contact police.

Emergency services rush to motorcycle crash on rural road

Update 11.25am: A motorcyclist involved in a crash has sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

Officers also report the incident has now been cleared.

10.25am: A single motorcycle has crashed on a rural road in the state’s North.

Emergency services are at the scene of the incident on Pipers River Rd at Karoola, which is south-west of Lilydale.

The crash happened heading north near the sharp right-hand bend past Rawleys Hill Rd.

Police say no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this stage.

Motorist have been asked to slow down and be cautious and patient in the area until the scene is cleared.

Man charged for alleged crime spree

April 19, 9.30am: Police believe a 45-year-old man went on a crime spree in Penguin on Wednesday morning.

Officers charged the man with a raft of charges including aggravated burglary, burglary, stealing, robbery, trespass, destroy property and using a controlled drug.

He faced court on Thursday and was remanded until his next appearance on May 9.

Police thanked members of the public who assisted with their inquiries.

Teenage P-plater has car clamped after high-speed incident

April 17, 11.40pm: A Railton P-plater has had his vehicle clamped for 28 days and will appear before the Magistrates Court in Devonport after he was clocked speeding at more than 50km/h above the limit earlier this week.

About 9pm Monday night, Latrobe Police detected the 17-year-old travelling at 151km/h in a 100km/h zone on Railton Road.

The youth has had his vehicle clamped for a period of 28 days and has been summonsed to appear at the Devonport Court at a later date.

Sergeant Jeremy Williams from Latrobe Police said: “Police would like to remind the community that we are committed to keeping our roads safe for all road users.”

“Dangerous driving, including high range speeding, will not be tolerated. If you witness dangerous or hooning vehicles, please report to police to enable us to investigate promptly to remove unsafe drivers from our roads.”

Second teenager charged over newsagency burglaries

4.30pm: A 14-year-old is believed to also be involved in a series of newsagent burglaries in the state’s North after a 17-year-old was charged last week over the matter.

Police have charged the Invermay teen with multiple stealing-related offences committed on Monday, April 8 at newsagents in Invermay and Kings Meadows.

They allege he worked alongside a 17-year-old who was charged last week.

In addition to those alleged burglaries, the 14-year-old also faces charges of motor vehicle stealing and a stealing with force allegedly committed in Launceston.

Police also believe he is linked to a reported burglary at an Invermay service station.

The teenager will appear in court this afternoon.

Officers say the investigation was led by Northern Criminal Investigation Division detectives and report recovering a significant amount of cigarettes and tobacco products.

Five teens accused of lighting a series of fires deliberately

2.50pm: Five teenagers have been charged after allegedly lighting more than 20 fires deliberately around New Norfolk.

Police say nine fires were reported over a three-day period from March 22-25, with garbage bins, a motor vehicle and vegetation targeted.

The five boys aged 14, 15, 16 and 17 are from New Norfolk, Gagebrook and Bridgewater.

Police say they’ve been charged with more than 20 offences in relation to deliberately lighting fires in High St, Pioneer Ave, Circle St, George St and Back River Rd.

The charges include unlawfully set fire to property, unlawfully set fire to vegetation and improper use of emergency carriage service.

The teenagers will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act, police say.

Police hunt for driver who fled scene of dangerous incident

Update 3pm: Tasmania Police says it’s caught the man they were searching for and he is now in custody.

Police say they’ve seized the Commodore and the man is assisting with inquiries.

April 15, 2.40pm: Police are on the hunt for a man who fled the scene of an alleged dangerous driving incident in the state’s North-West this afternoon.

Officers reported the driver was in a gold Holden Commodore sedan at about 2pm today, and say he was involved in a dangerous driving incident in Somerset.

They allege the driver dumped the vehicle and ran on foot.

It is believed he is in the area between Lyons and Raglan Sts, Somerset.

Police described the man as in his 30s, medium build, short dark hair and wearing dark clothing and white sunglasses.

Anyone who sees a person of that description is urged to contact police on 131 444.

Drunk driver ‘swerved violently’ to avoid crash, police say

April 14, 9am: A 30-year-old Devonport man is facing a number of charges after officers say they witnessed him narrowly avoiding a collision with a parked vehicle.

The incident on Saturday evening around 9.50pm, officers reported a red Toyota ute travelling north on William St, Devonport swerved violently to avoid a collision with a parked car.

Police say they caught the driver and have alleged he assaulted officers before being taken into custody.

The man reportedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.181.

He was charged with offences including high range drink driving, drive under the influence and disqualified driving.

He is set to appear before the Devonport Magistrates Court later today.
