Man in custody after alleged drunken trip
Tuesday, May 31
Drivers were forced to swerve out of the way as a man allegedly driving in a dangerous manner tried to evade police on Hobart city streets early Tuesday.
A Claremont man, 28, has been charged with a string of offences after the incident which began on Sandy Bay Rd about 12.40am on Tuesday and involved allegedly dangerous driving through Hobart, then north along the Brooker Highway to Claremont.
Tasmania Police said the charges included dangerous driving, evading police with aggravating circumstances and exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit.
Early Tuesday morning, police tried to intercept a white Holden Statesman sedan on Sandy Bay Rd.
Police allege the vehicle failed to stop, and was then driven in an “extremely dangerous manner” through Hobart and along the Brooker Highway.
Sergeant Angus Dobner said the male driver was located at his home address following the incident and taken into custody. He was breath tested and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.121 per cent. His vehicle was impounded.
“The risk this man’s (alleged) actions caused to other road users was significant, and thankfully the outcome wasn’t worse,” Sgt Dobner said.
“Police will continue to investigate all incidents of dangerous driving and hold these offenders to account.”
“Several vehicles had to take evasive action as a result of this man’s driving and police have spoken with some of them however, we would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed this vehicle or may have relevant dash cam footage.”
