Tasmania Police say a deceased 36-year-old woman in the state’s North was discovered by family members who attended the scene after the mother, whose two young boys sustained “internal injuries,” failed to arrive to work.

Police previously said they were called to a residence at Riverside at approximately 10am Monday, where they discovered the deceased woman in the company of her two children, aged one and four, who were both transported to hospital.

Police don’t believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death or injuries caused to the children.

“We don’t believe there was any foul play, don’t believe anyone else was involved. That’s about all I can say,” said Inspector Craig Fox, who provided an update on the tragedy at 3pm.

He said investigators had a “picture in mind” of what happened, but that he “won’t be commenting on the possible cause of what’s happened today until we’ve finished the investigation”.

He said police were called to the residence by a family member who had “arrived at the scene” over concerns the woman had not arrived at work.

“It was a really traumatic scene for friends and family,” Inspector Fox said.

Police and emergency services performed CPR and other life-saving techniques on the woman, although it was not immediately clear whether she was still alive by that stage.

Police await the result of blood tests performed on the woman and have begun preparing a report for the coroner.

Regarding the condition of the two boys, he said there were no “visible” injuries, but police suspected they had sustained “some internal injuries”.

The one-year-old, who was more severely injured, was originally due to be transported via air to Royal Hobart Hospital, but his condition improved such that he could also be treated at Launceston General Hospital alongside his brother, Inspector Fox said.

“There’s no physical obvious injuries, Both will remain at the LGH overnight,” he said.

“Both boys were conscious, talkative to police and ambulance and family members.”

Both are currently listed as being in stable conditions.
