A tribunal stoush between a Launceston recycling company and the state’s environmental watchdog has been avoided at the 11th hour, after the firm abandoned its appeal.

In February, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) ordered Recycal shut down its metal shredder, with concerns the lead was being spread through waste material.

Public Health Tasmania had advised nearby residents and businesses about the potential risks and offered free blood tests.

A five-day hearing had been set down in the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but on Monday the EPA announced that Recycal has abandoned its appeal against the Environment Protection Notice.

EPA Director Wes Ford said the notice was issued to protect the Rocherlea community from exposure to lead and other contaminants in dust emitted from the Recycal site, while a Human Health Risk Assessment was undertaken.

“Exposure to lead dust can impact human health, and samples from businesses, a school, and accommodation facilities in the Rocherlea area were found to be similar in composition to shredder floc produced at the Recycal site,” Mr Ford said.
