Tense scenes have unfolded in a Hobart court with the appearance of a New Town resident charged with murdering a woman in a fatal Glenorchy house fire.

David George Evans, 40, briefly appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday – but did not enter pleas to charges of murder, arson, motor vehicle stealing and unlawfully setting fire to property dating back to last Friday.

The woman who died in the house fire has now been identified as Alison Robinson, 39.

“David, I need to know if she suffered,” a woman called out to Mr Evans.

A man also spoke up at the end of the brief filing hearing.

“Nick off, you dog,” he said to Mr Evans.

Magistrate Marica Duvnjak heard Mr Evans would be represented by criminal defence lawyer Fabiano Cangelosi.

Mr Evans did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.

He will return to court, before Magistrate Chris Webster, on February 1.

According to court documents, Mr Evans is accused of murder in Glenorchy, along with the arson of 27 Sanders Street.

Mr Evans is also accused of stealing a blue Mazda 6, and unlawfully setting fire to it on the same date.

The Mercury previously reported that Mr Evans was taken into custody last Friday afternoon, after emergency services extinguished the Glenorchy house fire about 7am the same day.

A short time after they arrived, Ms Robinson’s body was found inside the home.

Police previously said a second crime scene was declared in Park Street, North Hobart, after the car was found on fire.

Tasmania Police is still appealing for information from members of the public, or CCTV footage, from those living or having travelled through North Hobart and New Town last Friday between 7am and 8am.

The particular area of interest is the region bordered by Park, Ryde and Argyle streets and Risdon Road.
