Authorities investigate sickening footage
Authorities are investigating an incident which has disgusted the local social media users in which a seagull is thrown to a man with a bat who clobbers the bird.
The video, of what looks like a lifeless bird, was taken at the South Burnie Beach carpark and has been doing the rounds on Facebook and Instagram.
It is unclear if the bird was alive before it was picked up, tossed and batted across the carpark.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania is investigating the incident.
A spokesman said anyone with information about suspected wildlife offences should report it to the Investigations and Enforcement Services section on 0417 661 234 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Multiple firearms seized in raid of residence
Police have charged a 56-year-old Southport man with firearm offences following the raid of a residence last weekend.
The search was conducted at a Southport home on Sunday as the result of information provided to police by a member of the public.
Nine unregistered firearms, ammunition and an undisclosed amount of illicit drugs were seized from the property.
Senior Constable Nick Evans commended the tip off, calling the information “invaluable”.
“It is important that you come forward and give police any information about these types of items,” he said.
“Unregistered firearms are a risk to our communities, and information from the public can help us get them off the street.”
“There is a permanent amnesty in Tasmania and unregistered or unwanted firearms can be handed in to police or licensed firearms dealers without any action being taken.”
“People should just ensure that contact is made prior to attending.”
The man will face court at a later date.
Machete wielding woman arrested at popular campsite
Police and specialist resources attended a campsite with reports of a woman armed with a machete on Monday evening.
According to police, the 28-year-old woman from Hobart was wielding the knife at the Dianas Basin campsite near St Helens about 10.50pm.
Upon arrival officers were approached by the armed woman who was subsequently sprayed with capsicum spray and went into nearby bushland.
Specialist resources including drones, the Westpac Rescue helicopter, trained negotiators and members of the Special Operations Group attended the scene.
The area was cordoned off for several hours while police worked through resolving the incident.
Members of the public were evacuated from several campsites nearby.
The woman was arrested about 5.00am and is expected to be charged over the incident later today.
Man airlifted to hospital following serious motorcycle crash
A 50-year-old motorcycle rider was involved in a serious accident after reportedly crashing into a concrete culvert and subsequently a tree in Port Huon over the weekend.
The man was seen travelling at high speed on a blue Suzuki motorbike before losing control and crashing about 7.44am on Saturday morning, witnesses told police.
The rider was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Sergeant Simon Ward said at this stage, excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
“Motorcycle crashes make up 20 percent of Tasmania’s fatalities and serious injuries and are more vulnerable on our roads as there is little protecting them in the event of a crash such as this.
“Please don’t take any risks if you’re travelling on our roads – we need to make sure everyone gets where they’re going safely.
“We would also like to remind motorists that the speed limit around stationary or slow-moving emergency vehicles that are displaying flashing lights is 40 kilometres per hour,” said Sergeant Ward.
Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact 131 444 or Crimestoppers Tasmania at crimestopperstas.com.au
Youths nabbed over spree of ‘homemade explosives’ incidents
Two youths will face court after police say homemade explosive devices caused damage to properties in New Norfolk last week.
A Tasmania Police spokesperson said in the early hours on January 25 and 26, police received reports of loud bangs in the areas of Pioneer Avenue, Kensington Street, Cowburn Road and Hazelwood Road in New Norfolk.
“Minor property damage was caused to a bus shelter, letter box and window. No injuries were reported,” the spokesperson said.
“As a result of police attendance, officers from New Norfolk Police, Bridgewater CIB and the Bomb Response Group conducted a number of searches in the New Norfolk area in the days following and police have interviewed several youths who are being proceeded against for relevant offences.
“Police are confident that they have seized all relevant materials and have safely disposed of any remaining explosive devices.
“This is a timely reminder of the dangers surrounding explosives and that it is an offence to make any explosive device.
“Should a member of the public see any suspicious item, do not handle or move the item. In these circumstances, police should be called at the earliest opportunity so they can attend and make an assessment.”
Anyone with information in relation to the explosions in the New Norfolk area are urged to call the Bridgewater Criminal Investigation Branch on 131 444 or you can report anonymously to crimestopperstas.com.au
