A 37-year-old Launceston woman has been charged with several road safety offences, including death by negligent driving, in relation to a fatal crash at Ravenswood late last year.
Mowbray man Phillip James Standage, 36, a father-of-three, died when the vehicle in which he was travelling as a passenger struck a power pole on Faraday St, Ravenswood, at 3.23am on August 28, 2023.
Mr Standage, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver, a Waverley woman, was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Speaking in the wake of Mr Standage’s death, Tasmania Police Inspector Craig Fox said he believed the loss of life could have been “preventable”.
“Preliminary investigations into the cause of the accident are still ongoing, but speed seems to be a factor, as well as the non-wearing of a seat belt,” Inspector Fox claimed.
He said that the deceased and the woman appeared to have been in a relationship at some point, but he was unsure of its status at the time of the crash.
Ms Chilcott will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Monday, August 26.
