THE former treasurer of an elite “sports-oriented luncheon club” will soon be sentenced for ripping off well in excess of $100,000 from its Tasmanian branch.

Michael John Wisby, 75, has pleaded guilty to 124 counts of computer-related fraud by transferring sums of money – ranging from amounts as low as $220 to as high as $2600 – from the coffers of the Carbine Club of Tasmania to his own personal account.

He’s also pleaded guilty to three counts of dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage by making out and cashing cheques from the Carbine Club, totalling an additional $5100.

The offending unfolded during 2018 and 2019.

In the Supreme Court of Tasmania on Thursday, Mr Wisby appeared unrepresented and announced he’d rescinded involvement with his lawyer given he’d “expended a serious amount of money going through this case”.

“I was quoted an initial sum of $20,000, which disappeared quickly,” he said.

“I was recently told I needed to put another substantial amount in the trust account or I wouldn’t be represented. I didn’t have that amount so that’s why I’m here today.”

Justice Michael Brett noted Mr Wisby had pleaded guilty to the offences some time ago, adding “I’d like to get started on these proceedings”.

“I just don’t understand why the matter hasn’t been dealt with,” he said.

Mr Wisby told the court he wanted to be assessed for his suitability for home detention.

“I have a sick wife who I care for 24/7,” he said.

Justice Brett adjourned the hearing until Friday, and asked Mr Wisby to speak with a Legal Aid lawyer present in the courtroom.

A 2017 edition of the club’s magazine The Carbiner congratulated Mr Wisby on becoming a life member after his lengthy stint as treasurer.

The Carbine Club is named after the champion New Zealand racehorse that won dozens of eminent races, including the 1890 Melbourne Cup.

The club was formed in Melbourne but has 15 chapters across Australia and overseas, with a number of notable members including Eddie McGuire, Ron Barassi, Gillon McLachlan and David Crawford.
