An elderly man has been successfully rescued after he was lost in one of Tasmania’s most secluded regions and suffering from exposure.
Tasmania Police and emergency services, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, were called to the state’s West Coast last night to help find a missing man.
Police were notified about an unmanned boat being located on the Pieman River about 4pm with a 75-year-old unaccounted for.
Police established a search base at Corinna and commenced air, ground and water searches between Corinna and Pieman Heads.
The man, William, was located alive and suffering from exposure around 8pm and was guided out for medical care.
It’s believed William crashed his vessel into the riverbank before going onto the shoreline.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
Police thanked volunteers for their help during the search, including Dylan and Caleb from Burnie, and vessel skipper Norm.
Police have reminded boat operators of the risks of inattention while in control of a vessel, and the importance of letting someone know your movements and anticipated return.
