A high-profile Tasmanian hospitality figure accused of trying to rip off an insurance company for almost $200,000 following a Lamborghini crash has made a brief appearance by phone in a Hobart courtroom.

Lipscombe Larder owner John Spiro Fiotakis is facing one count of attempting to dishonestly acquire a financial advantage from Allianz Insurance Australia, after allegedly falsely stating he was the driver of a Lamborghini Gallardo when it was involved in an accident in June, 2019.

On Tuesday, Mr Fiotakis dialled in to the Supreme Court of Tasmania by telephone for a brief hearing into his case presided over by Chief Justice Chris Shanahan.

Chief Justice Shanahan told the court that Mr Fiotakis’s case was one of the oldest unresolved matters on the Supreme Court’s lists, and indicated his determination to bring the matter to trial as soon as possible.

His Honour adjourned the case until Thursday 27 March, and bailed Mr Fiotakis to reappear on that date.
