A Northern Tasmanian teacher accused of child sexual abuse has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Launceston man Troy Ridgeway, 34, was charged with two counts of penetrative sexual abuse of a child or a young person following his arrest in April.
Mr Ridgeway pleaded not guilty to both counts at the Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He was also charged with an additional count of penetrative sexual abuse of a child or a young person, but the charge was dismissed by Magistrate Sharon Cure.

Defence lawyer Olivia requested a preliminary proceedings date for Mr Ridgeway on August 13 at 2.15pm.

Tasmania Police say the offences allegedly took place in 2019 and came to light following an extensive police investigation.

In a previous statement released by Catholic Education Tasmania, a spokesman acknowledged the impact of the allegations.

“We understand the potential impact this may have on the College community,” the Catholic Education Tasmania spokesman said.

“Our priority remains the wellbeing and support of our students and staff. We will be working closely with members of the College and the broader community to provide them with support during this time.

“No further comment is appropriate as the matter is in front of the courts.”
