A young man has pleaded guilty to negligently causing the death of Mercury delivery driver John Tscherkaskyj, in a road crash in 2021.
On Wednesday, 19-year-old Kobe Brenden McCauley appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court, charged with causing the death of another person by negligent driving and causing grievous bodily harm by negligent driving.
Mr McCauley entered a plea of guilty to both charges.
On August 8 last year Mr Tscherkaskyj, 56, known among friends as John Custard Jay, died in a head on crash with the car Mr McCauley was driving on Gordon River Rd, Glenora.
Police said Mr McCauley failed to keep left, crossed a solid white line and failed to keep a proper lookout.
A statement issued by police last year said the head-on crash occurred about 1.45am on August 8 between two Toyota HiLux vehicles – one travelling east and one travelling west.
The statement said the man driving west died at the scene, while the 18-year-old male driver of the other car and an 18-year-old female front passenger were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Tscherkaskyj, 56, was a Goodwood resident and father of 13 children.
He was delivering newspapers on Gordon River Rd at the time of his death.
Mr McCauley will return to court for sentencing on August 23.
