A Hobart man has avoided jail after making a $50,000 purchase of cocaine from Sydney drug dealers.

Jordyn Jack Webb, 28, pleaded guilty to trafficking in a controlled substance after buying the drug in bulk during December 2018, to split between himself and four friends.

While sentencing, Supreme Court Chief Justice Alan Blow said the Sydney dealers in question were under surveillance from police when Webb made the purchase “at a place in Hobart”.

Chief Justice Blow said prosecutors alleged Webb, a single father with an “excellent” employment history, purchased 10 ounces of the drug, acting as an intermediary.

He said Webb committed the crime of trafficking in relation to most of the cocaine in his possession, with the remainder to “be kept for personal use”.

Several months after the purchase, police raided Webb’s home and he attended the Hobart Police Station voluntarily, making “significant admissions”.

“Although it has taken some time, you have subsequently pleaded guilty,” Chief Justice Blow said.

“It is not a case where I can say that the delay was anybody’s fault. Matters needed to be resolved as to the nature and quantity of the drug in question.”

The judge said the Sydney dealers had all since been sentenced.

He said Webb started using cocaine in his late teens or early 20s, but had not gone on to commit a string of offences, “like it does for some people”.

“You remained a recreational user of the drug. You very much regret that you got yourself into this situation and that you have placed your employment, and your liberty and your relationship with your child, at risk,” Chief Justice Blow said.

The judge noted Webb didn’t have significant prior convictions, and had “stayed out of trouble” in the five years since the crime.

Webb was given a 10-month prison sentence, wholly suspended on condition he commit no offence punishable by imprisonment for two years.
