A prolific Tasmanian domestic violence offender remanded on 144 charges began reoffending against his ex-partner the day he was released from Risdon, where he was serving a sentence for offences against the same woman.
Ravenswood man Jarrod Robert Andrew Wright, 27, appeared via video link in Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday. He has been remanded in pre-sentence custody since January 31 this year.
His 144 offences, which he previously pleaded guilty to, consisted primarily of breaching his bail and a police family violence order put in place to protect the woman.
He committed trespass and theft when he let himself into her house at Summerhill on July 20, 2022 – the day he was released from Risdon on his previous sentence – took items and wrote ‘I love you’ on a calendar.
A month later, on August 22, Wright assaulted the woman by grabbing at her during an argument. It was the third time he had assaulted her, the court was told.
He previously pushed her against a car and dragged her by the throat in separate episodes.
Most of his offences were committed between December last year and his arrest on January 31. They primarily consisted of Wright calling, texting and messaging the woman on multiple platforms, sometimes dozens of times a day.
In four days in January, Wright left the woman 83 voice messages, in addition to dozens of text messages and social media interactions. Some of his messages were abusive, some incoherent. Many were blank or consisted of nothing but emojis.
At one point, he messaged her a notorious video featuring two Tasmanians allegedly engaging in bestiality by using a live trout as a sex toy. Police slapped him with a charge of possessing a bestiality product.
Wright was arrested and charged on January 31 after the woman revealed the abusive messages to police, who were calling her in the wake of the woman seeing Wright in town.
The court was told Wright had a 27-page criminal history and had been in and out of custody since 2016.
Wright told Magistrate Ken Stanton he just wanted to get the sentence “over with” so he could go and “do the right thing by my son”.
Wright said he was a disability support pensioner following a car accident and bowel problems and worked casually “picking spuds” and other vegetables at Scottsdale.
Mr Stanton ordered a pre-sentence report on Wright before determining his sentence.
Mr Stanton adjourned to deliver his sentence on May 10.
