Woman faces charges over fatal crash outside Cosgrove High School in April 2024

Police have laid charges nearly a year after a fatal crash that killed a 12-year-old Cosgrove High School student, who was allegedly hit by a car outside his school.

Charges laid over fatal crash outside Cosgrove High School

March 17, 10.40am: A 41-year-old woman has been charged over a fatal crash on Main Rd, Glenorchy last April, police say.

The crash occurred on April 5, 2025 killed 12-year-old Cosgrove High School student Marshall Oakley Stagg, who was allegedly hit by a car outside his school, and led to an outpouring of community mourning.

On Monday, police said the woman had been charged with causing death by negligent driving and driving without due care and attention.

She is set to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on May 2.

At the time of the crash, police said the incident allegedly occurred at the end of the school day and the collision happened as children were walking down the footpath.

Huon Highway down to one lane after single vehicle crash

Traffic has slowed on the Huon Highway after a single vehicle crash partially blocked one lane, causing delays for those heading south to Seafest.

Emergency services were on the scene on the Huon Highway near Glendevie just after midday on Sunday.

Tasmania Police Sergeant Chris Cheeseman said the vehicle was partially blocking the highway at Glendevie, with traffic down to one lane while the scene was being cleared.

He expected the lane to be closed for at least an hour while emergency services wait on a tow truck.

Sergeant Cheeseman said drivers should consider taking the Esperance Coast Road until the scene is cleared.

Glenorchy man accused of stealing e-bikes, e-scooters

March 16, 9.30am: A 31-year-old Glenorchy man has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing almost $60,000 worth of E-bikes, E-scooters and bikes, police say.

Police allege the 19 thefts, consisting mostly of electric scooters, electric bikes and bicycles that were secured in areas accessible to the public, were committed over three months.

Police said they located a quantity of allegedly stolen property as a result of the search and would be conducting inquiries into ownership.

The man was detained and is set to appear in the Hobart magistrates court today.

He was also charged with multiple breaches of bail and failing to appear in court.

Two charged following Eastern Shore lockdown

March 15, 8.24am: Two people have been charged following a school and street lockdown in Lindisfarne on Friday.

Police have charged a 29-year-old woman with aggravated assault and firearm offences and a 40-year-old man for damage to property and firearm offences following an “isolated incident” in Henley Street, Lindisfarne.

Police said they were called to a residential property about 2:20pm following reports a firearm had been shot towards a house.

The road was closed between Loatta Road and Glenelg Street for around 40 minutes while police secured the scene, where police state they located a firearm inside the house, and took two people into custody.

Police confirmed both people involved are known to each other and no one was injured in the incident.

The woman and man have both been detained and will appear in court on Saturday morning.

Primary school locked down over police incident

UPDATE 3.55pm: Henley Street, Lindisfarne was opened to traffic at 3.40pm.

Police remain at the scene and one person is assisting with ongoing inquiries.

No injuries occurred in the reported incident and there is no risk to the public.

3.39pm: An Eastern Shore primary school was briefly locked down on Friday afternoon as police swarmed on a suburban street.

Tasmania Police said they responded to an “isolated incident” on Henley Street in Lindisfarne around 3pm Friday.

The road remains closed to the public between Loatta Road and Glenelg Street, with police asking the public to avoid the area.

They confirmed there was no risk to the public.

This incident resulted in Lindisfarne primary School being briefly shutdown, right around school pick-up time.

Police stated one person is currently assisting them with their inquiries.

Lindisfarne Primary School was contacted and the Mercury was told “No comment. We are pretty busy right now”.

Police investigating suspicious Devonport house fire

March 14, 8.10am: Police are investigating a night fire at an East Devonport home on Thursday, labelling it suspicious.

Police and firefighters were called to the weatherboard property at 61 Brooke Street, East Devonport at 6.07pm on Thursday, finding the fire well alight.

Firefighting efforts focused on extinguishing the fire, but the residence was destroyed.

Police said investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire and urged anyone with information to contact Devonport police.

Police seize $30,000 worth of property during Exeter search

2.40pm: A 32-year-old man is believed to have stolen $30k worth of property including power tools and Tasmanian number plates, police say.

On Wednesday, a specialist police team raided an Exeter home.

Police said they seized drugs including MDMA and cannabis, and illegal firearm parts including silencers during the search.

The man was arrested and charged with multiple offences including possessing a silencer, possessing a controlled drug and unlawful possession.

He is set to appear in the Launceston Magistrates court at a later date.

Charges laid after alleged hammer threats at Eastlands

9.30am: Police have laid charges after a trio allegedly made threats with a hammer at Eastlands Shopping Centre on Wednesday night.

Officers allege a 20-year-old West Hobart woman and a 19-year-old Bellerive woman assaulted a police officer.

While the West Hobart woman and a 15-year-old teen from Gagebrook were charged with unlawfully possessing a dangerous item in a public place. Police had earlier claimed the dangerous item to be a hammer.

All three are facing common assault charges.

The 20-year-old will face the Hobart Magistrates Court today, the Bellerive woman has been bailed to appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court on June 18 and the teenage was bailed to appear before the Youth Justice Court at a later date.

Inspector Andrew Keane said police would not tolerate dangerous and anti-social behaviour in the community.

“Carrying dangerous articles and threatening and assaulting members of our community, including our emergency services personnel, is unacceptable,” he said.

“Everyone has the right to be safe in our community.”

Meanwhile in the state’s North, two teenagers have been charged with two alleged armed robberies in Launceston on Wednesday.

Officers allege a 14-year-old boy entered two businesses in Bathurst St and stole alcohol while in possession of a knife.

The teenager has also been accused of two alleged armed robberies at businesses on March 12 and March 9.

He as detained to appear in the Youth Justice Division of the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

A second 14-year-old boy allegedly entered one of the businesses with the other teen, and has also been charged with aggravated armed robbery.

He will appear in court at a later date.

Police said nobody was physically injured during either incident.

81-year-old injured after serious Arthur Hwy crash

March 13, 8am: An 81-year-old Dodges Ferry man is seriously injured after a three vehicle crash on the Arthur Highway, Sorell.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at about 6pm near the new roundabout on the exit to Sorell near Nugent Rd.

Police confirmed the elderly man was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.

Police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone who has seen a 2010 white Ford ute driving in the Dodges Ferry area or towards Sorell prior to the crash to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

Also overnight, three people were taken into custody after allegedly threatening people with a hammer at Eastlands Shopping Centre.

Police said two women and a teenager were involved in the disturbance at about 6.30pm.

Officers allege two of them were possessed a hammer.

Two people sustained minor injuries during the altercation, police said.

Highway closed following serious truck and car crash

A driver is in a serious but stable condition after a car and truck crashed on the East Derwent Highway at Risdon Vale.

Emergency services responded to the “serious crash” between a truck and a car about 3.15pm.

Police remained on the scene of the crash with the highway closed in both directions about 4.40pm on Wednesday.

The highway was closed from the Bowen Bridge to the roundabout near Grasstree Hill.

Crash investigators were on the scene and police expected the road to remain closed for at least two hours.

Police advised people to take an alternate route as significant traffic disruptions were expected.

March 12, 9.50am: Before Tasmania’s container deposit scheme begins — which will refund recyclables for cash — one of the scheme’s dispensers has been destroyed.

Tasmania Police confirmed the recycling dispenser in the Claremont Plaza Shopping Centre carpark was destroyed by fire on Monday.

Officers believe it was deliberately lit and are investigating.

No injuries were reported, police say.

Police helicopter races to motorcycle crash

3.35pm: Emergency services, including the police helicopter, are rushing to the scene of a reported motorcycle crash.

It’s understood a man who was riding the motorbike has sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the incident on the Lyell Highway Southwest.

Police say it’s believed to be a single vehicle crash.

Vehicle crashes into yard at Fern Tree

Update 4.10pm: The crash has now been cleared and traffic has returned to normal at Huon Rd, Fern Tree.

March 10, 2.20pm: A vehicle has come off the road and driven into a yard, police said.

Emergency services have arrived to the scene of the single vehicle crash on Huon Rd, Fern Tree near number 653.

Police said paramedics were assessing the multiple occupants in the car with initial indications some had minor injuries and some would be transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital for further assessment.

The road is expected to remain blocked while the scene is cleared.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
