A Tasmanian woman who savagely bashed another woman after a night of heavy drinking at the rodeo, punching her victim to the head and upper body four times, breaking her nose, has been convicted but not further punished.

George Town woman Hollie Elizabeth Kim, 26, was sentenced in Launceston Supreme Court on Thursday on one count of assault under the Criminal Code Act (1924).

The court heard that Kim attended the George Town Rodeo on March 19 last year with her partner when there was a “verbal exchange” between Kim and her victim in the smoking area.

After midnight, Kim and her partner left the rodeo on foot, walking in the direction of the George Town Motor Inn, where a friend was staying.

The pair were followed by the victim and another person, who happened to be walking in the same direction.

Kim turned, shout, “F--- off, why are you following us?” and pushed the woman, the court heard.

After the woman pushed back, Kim punched her “hard” to the face, causing her to topple, at which point Kim delivered another three blows to the woman’s head and upper body area.

Justice Gregory Geason told the court that although the woman did not lose consciousness, she was left with a broken nose and suffered “ongoing headaches”.

He said that Kim, who had no prior criminal history of any kind, made “full and frank admissions” and expressed remorse when subsequently interviewed by police.

He said that the mother-of-three had led a previously blameless life and was “significantly intoxicated” when she committed the assault.

Justice Geason said there was “some animosity” between Kim and her victim – irrelevant for the purposes of his sentencing – that had been fuelled by a “belief [the victim] made repeated offensive comments about you and your family”.

He described the offending as being “solely due to excessive alcohol consumption” and noted that Kim was not drinking since the birth of her third child.

Justice Geason convicted Kim but declined to impose any additional penalty.
