A man who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking has avoided having to go to prison, instead given a home detention order for his role in a drug operation.

Dylan Angus Grundy was sentenced in the Supreme Court in Burnie after pleading guilty to one count of trafficking a controlled substance.

Between July 2022 and June 29, 2023, Grundy and Kianna Rose Whaling sold illegal drugs, including methylamphetamine, cocaine and cannabis.

In February, Whaling was sentenced to two years in prison, backdated to August 10, 2023, on one count of trafficking a controlled substance.

During sentencing, Justice Tamara Jago said that between July and November 2022, the pair sold approximately $130,000 worth of methylamphetamine, in addition to the sale of other drugs.

Following a previous search of Whaling’s house on September 6, 2022, a month later, on October 19, the pair were intercepted by police while travelling in a taxi.

Whaling was found with 0.25 grams of methylamphetamine and 6.57 grams of cannabis, along with a “smoking device.”

One of the messages found on Grundy’s phone by police indicated that he was encouraging Whaling to sell a large quantity of drugs.

Another text from him to his co-accused detailed a deal where the pair hoped to make $17,500.

“I know how you are going to react when you see this,” the message said.

“But we are both hustlers, piece of p***. Just have to be smart and get the s*** out there.”

The pair were subjected to two more police searches before eventually admitting to their drug enterprise.

Justice Tamara Jago said that the pair admitted they made approximately 10 drug sales per week.

She sentenced Grundy to a 14-month home detention order.

Grundy must also perform 90 hours of community service within 24 months.
