A MOONAH man has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of a pedestrian in central Hobart by negligent driving.

Allan Charles Kelly, 55, faced the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday following the alleged incident on September 19, 2019, at the intersection of Argyle and Collins streets.

According to court documents, Mr Kelly has pleaded not guilty to causing the death by failing to keep a proper lookout, failing to give way to pedestrians, failing to avoid a collision and failing to drive with reasonable caution and care for other road users.

He has also pleaded not guilty to driving without due care and attention and driving without a drivers’ licence.

Mr Kelly’s lawyer Craig Rainbird told the court that prosecutors had only just received the file and needed time to review it.

At a hearing last October, Mr Rainbird said he’d received hundreds of pages of documents, CCTV footage and a record of interview relating to the case, with “a lot to digest” before the matter could proceed.

Mr Kelly, who is on bail, appeared in person at Thursday’s hearing.

He was bailed to return to court on April 5.

The Mercury previously reported a 39-year-old pedestrian died after allegedly being struck by a car at the intersection of Argyle and Collins Streets.

The woman, a United Kingdom citizen, was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to Tasmania Police at the time, the driver, then 53, was uninjured.
