A Launceston man has farewelled his friend with a burn out which has left him dealing with a court fine.

Daniel Brown, 28, pleaded guilty to doing a burn out in his yellow Holden Commodore.

The incident occurred in November 2022, where Brown had left the funeral of a friend who had died in a motor vehicle accident.

In the line of funeral cars in Cooee near the Brick Port intersection on Bass Highway, at 5pm in the evening, Brown revved his car and did a burn out, creating smoke and slowly moving out of traffic.

A police car had been stopped at the intersection, had heard the high revving vehicle and as cars moved clearly saw the smoke and the slowly moving car.

Brown was not only in the line of the funeral cars but his passenger was the deceased man’s brother.

Brown said at the moment it was a way of “seeing his friend off”, as his friend had loved the commodore vehicle.

The defence counsel said it was a “strange way” of honouring his friend, but said it was a “reasonably controlled manoeuvre” by Brown.

Magistrate Simon Brown was not impressed and said it was an “ironic” action for someone who had been killed in a motor vehicle accident.

Magistrate Brown said it would have been “frightening” for people.

“This sort of thing is just not acceptable, funeral or otherwise,” he said.

The man was fined $1000.
