Coronial findings have detailed the cause of death for a much loved Tasmanian motorcyclist and author.
Leon Gordon Cupit passed away in April last year when he crashed on his motorbike into a car at the intersection of Colebrook Rd and Barton Vale Rd in Campania.The 62-year-old Dynnyrne man had been well known in the biker community. Emotional tributes nearly a year after his passing continue to flood his Facebook profile.
The community held a special group ride at his rainy funeral in May last year.
“Mr Cupit died as a result of injuries sustained by him when, as the rider of a mechanically sound Triumph motorcycle, he attempted to overtake, and collided with, a vehicle travelling in the same direction as him,” Coroner Simon Cooper said.
“The collision occurred in an area of road delineated by double white continuous lines that expressly prohibited overtaking.”
Mr Cooper said the crash was a result of Mr Cupit’s inattention.
“I convey my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr Cupit,” he said.
Mr Cupit had penned books on his favourite pastime, such as A Rider’s Guide to Touring Tasmania and the Ultimate Rider’s Guide to Accommodation in Tasmania.
Beyond his love of motorbikes, he had been a sports trainer at Sandy Bay Football Club before becoming head trainer for the VFL Tassie Devils, and working with several AFL teams in Tasmania.
Mr Cupit’s work as a building inspector had earned him respect in the Real Estate industry.
